Mafafas' farms, slightly larger than neighboring areas, have historically focused on coffee cultivation. However, due to its northern location and increased susceptibility to damaging cold winds, many farmers have recently transitioned to livestock. A devastating frost four years ago decimated most coffee plants, resulting in younger or smaller coffee plants compared to southern regions.

Mafafas possesses a unique microclimate characterized by rapid shifts from moderate heat to intense cold, influenced by its altitude and northern winds. These drastic temperature fluctuations necessitate that producers adapt their farms. They achieve this by strategically utilizing a specific array of shade trees and companion crops, tailored to the unique conditions of each farm.
