Cosautlan (Nahuatl for "Place of Gold”) is one of the main coffee-growing communities in Veracruz, and one of its first coffee-growing regions. It’s located in a much flatter area than most of Veracruz’s coffee regions, allowing for slightly larger farms. Although Cosautlan features a less-rugged terrain, it’s distant from the big cities, which offers benefits and obstacles. One of the clearest benefits is that the forest surrounding the region is pristine. The biggest obstacle is that residents don’t have access to various big-city amenities like adequate health facilities and a diversity of job opportunities. The distance forces residents to dedicate themselves to agriculture (essentially coffee and lemons).
